The Role of Miracles in Evangelism
Miracles in the OT were often viewed as signs (Exod4:8:23). Extraordinary events were given as signs to insure faith or demonstrate authority.
When Moses would not believe God, his rod was turned into a serpent and his hand became leprous as sign of God’s divine commission (Exod. 4:1-8).
The recorded Signs and Miracles performed by Jesus Christ are a few among the many that He actually did. John says, “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book” (John20:30).
It seems obvious from the scriptures, then, that divine acts were expected, and acted as confirmation that God was amongst his people.

The ministry of the Apostles after Christ’s ascension began with the miracle of “languages” on the day of Pentecost. There were many others that happened throughout the life of the Apostles. The book of Hebrew states this, “salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will” (Heb2:3-4).
The purpose of miracles is therefore,demonstrating the presence of the Kingdom of God on earth. Jesus in several occasions expressed his purpose in working miracles.He rebuked those whose desire was only to see the miracles.
His miracles were evidence of the genuineness of his message (John5:36). He declared, “Do not believe in me unless I do what my father does. But if I do it, even though you do not believe in me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father” (John10:37-38). The healing of the two blind men near Jericho confirms to us that another purpose of miracles is to help those in need (Matt20:30-34). Finally, the purpose of miracles is to glorify God (Matt. 9:8, John9:3).
Miracles as signs of the presence of the Kingdom of God are absolute essential in Evangelism.They therefore have to frequent in evangelism meetings.
Believers can learn to minister like Jesus through practicing the scriptures, learning to listen to the Holy spirit, taking risks in trusting God for what he says, asking without losing heart, serving with compassion and love, and always be willing to learn from others and obedience to God.
The work of witnessing to the saving grace through faith in Jesus is not a preserve of a few professionals. In 1Cor.12:13, we are reminded that we are all baptized into one body by the Spirit and have been given one Spirit to drink. Therefore our divine mandate is to love others and witnessing to those that will receive salvation. Our master wishes us to move in the power of the Holy Spirit in demonstrating the Good News in the miraculous.Source:www.avc-kenya.org
